- Alvin and all other brands of lead are made of graphite. There has not been any actual lead in "lead" made for at least 50 to 75 years, maybe longer. Lead was one of the first things used for writing and even though it didn't work very well the name stuck. Real lead was too hard to work with in manufacturing, inconsistent, and did not transfer a good image to the paper. Most lead is now made of graphite, some clay, polymers and binding agents, with some variations among different manufacturers.
