45° and 30°/60° Triangles
These are the two triangles you will use most often. The 45° triangle has two 45° angles and one 90° angle, making it great for drawing vertical, horizontal, and 45° lines. The 30°/60° triangle provides 30°, 60°, and 90° angles and is commonly used for architectural drafting and isometric drawings.
If you are taking a drafting class, you will usually want both a 45° and a 30°/60° triangle. Used together, they allow you to draw additional angles such as 15° and 75° without the need for an adjustable triangle. That's one reason these two triangles remain standard items in most drafting kits.
Adjustable Triangles
An adjustable triangle allows you to set and lock almost any angle, making it more versatile than a standard 45° or 30°/60° triangle. They are useful for roof pitches, custom angles, and other layouts where fixed triangles can be limiting.
Most adjustable triangles lock into position with a thumbscrew, and many include angle graduations for quick reference. While not required for most drafting classes, they are a handy tool for advanced drafting and layout work.
Straight Edge or Inking Edge?
A straight edge triangle sits flat against the paper and works well for everyday pencil drafting. An inking edge triangle has a raised ridge along the edge that lifts it slightly off the paper, helping prevent technical pen ink from bleeding underneath and smearing.
If you are primarily working in pencil, a straight edge triangle is usually the best choice. If you are producing inked drawings, an inking edge can make a noticeable difference.
Smoke, Fluorescent, or Clear?
Clear acrylic triangles allow you to see your drawing underneath the tool, making alignment easy. Smoke triangles offer the same visibility while reducing glare from bright lights. Fluorescent triangles, often bright orange or yellow, are easy to spot on a crowded drafting table or job site and remain highly visible in a variety of lighting conditions.
The right choice usually comes down to personal preference, but many students and professionals prefer fluorescent triangles because they are easy to find when surrounded by plans, tools, and paperwork.
