Technical Fiber Tip Pens
A good fineliner is one of those things you do not think about until you have a bad one. Skipping, bleeding, tips that fray after a few uses...it adds up fast when you are in the middle of a drawing. A Few Things Worth Knowing
Pigment ink vs. dye ink. Pigment-based inks like those in the Sakura Pigma Micron and Staedtler Pigment Liner are waterproof once dry and built to last. They are the right choice for finished work and anything archival. Dye-based inks work fine for sketching and layouts but are not meant for long-term storage.
Line width matters. Fine tips in the 0.05mm to 0.2mm range are what you want for dimensions, lettering, and small symbols. The 0.3mm to 0.5mm range covers most general drawing and sketching. Anything 0.8mm and above is for borders, outlines, and fills. If you are not sure where to start, a set gives you the range and takes the guesswork out of it.
Paper makes a difference. Smooth surfaces like bristol, vellum, and marker paper get the most out of a fine-tip pen. Rougher papers wear tips down faster.
