Choosing the right paper comes down to understanding what each type is designed to do. Here is a quick breakdown.
Drafting Vellum
The go-to surface for professional hand drafting. Made from 100% cotton rag fiber, vellum holds pencil and technical pen lines cleanly, stays flat under repeated use, and has the transparency needed for overlay work and diazo reproduction. Clearprint 1000H has been the industry standard for decades, available in sheets, pads, and rolls with or without printed grids.
Drafting Mylar Film
The step up from vellum when dimensional stability matters most. Polyester based rather than cotton fiber, mylar holds its size and shape under temperature and humidity changes that would cause vellum to shift. More durable, more tear resistant, and better suited for structural drawings, long term archiving, or any original that will go through repeated handling.
Sketch and Tracing Paper
The working paper of the drafting table. Translucent enough to trace over existing drawings and light enough to layer, these rolls and pads are what you reach for during preliminary sketches, overlays, and redlines before committing to vellum or mylar. Layout Bond and Graph Paper
