Which Mechanical Pencil Lead Size Should You Choose?
Mechanical pencil lead sizes are measured by diameter. Smaller lead creates a finer line for detailed work, while wider lead produces a bolder line and is less likely to break. The best size depends on how you plan to use the pencil and how much pressure you normally apply while writing or drawing.
0.2 mm Mechanical Pencil Lead
A 0.2 mm mechanical pencil creates an ultra-fine line for work that requires a high level of precision. It is especially useful for intricate technical drawings, very small lettering, tight details, and drawings completed at a reduced scale. Because the lead is extremely thin, it should be used with light pressure.
Best for: Intricate drafting, ultra-fine details, small lettering, precise diagrams, and reduced-scale drawings.
0.3 mm Mechanical Pencil Lead
A 0.3 mm mechanical pencil produces an extra-fine line. It works well for detailed technical drawings, small lettering, fine dimension lines, and drawings completed at a reduced scale. Because the lead is thin, it should be used with a lighter touch.
Best for: Detailed drafting, fine linework, small lettering, diagrams, and precision work.
0.5 mm Mechanical Pencil Lead
The 0.5 mm size provides a good balance between a fine line and dependable lead strength. It is a versatile choice for drafting, technical drawing, schoolwork, note-taking, and general writing. If you are unsure which size to choose, 0.5 mm is a good place to start.
Best for: General drafting, technical drawing, writing, schoolwork, and everyday use.
0.7 mm Mechanical Pencil Lead
A 0.7 mm mechanical pencil creates a medium-width line that is more visible than a 0.5 mm line. The thicker lead is also less likely to break, making it a practical choice for students and anyone who tends to press harder while writing or drawing.
Best for: Sketching, note-taking, medium-weight lines, students, and heavy-handed writers.
0.9 mm Mechanical Pencil Lead
The 0.9 mm size produces a thicker line and offers the greatest resistance to breaking. It works well for rough sketches, bold outlines, general marking, and users who prefer a sturdier mechanical pencil lead.
Best for: Bold lines, rough sketches, outlining, marking, and heavier writing pressure.
1.3 mm Mechanical Pencil Lead
A 1.3 mm mechanical pencil produces an extra-bold line and provides excellent resistance to breaking. Its wider lead is well suited for sketching, outlining, general marking, and users who prefer a strong, substantial writing point.
Best for: Bold sketching, heavy outlines, general marking, woodworking, and firm writing pressure.
Lead Size vs. Lead Hardness
Lead size and lead hardness are not the same. The size—such as 0.3 mm or 0.5 mm—determines the width and strength of the lead. The grade—such as B, HB, H, or 2H—determines how dark or hard the lead is.
Softer B-grade leads generally make darker lines, while harder H-grade leads create lighter, sharper lines. HB falls between the two and is comparable to a standard No. 2 pencil.
Our most popular choice: HB is our best-selling grade in every lead size because it provides a dependable balance of darkness, smoothness, and durability. If you are uncertain about lead hardness, HB is the best general-purpose choice.
When ordering replacement lead, make sure the diameter matches the size supported by your mechanical pencil.
