Every school year is a little different, but one thing stays the same. The earlier you order, the easier the process usually is.

Manufacturers continue to discontinue products, change packaging, and simplify some product lines. At the same time, colleges across the country begin posting supply lists, creating a surge in demand for many of the same drafting tools.

If your instructor has already shared the list, ordering early gives you the best selection and enough time to ask questions before the first assignment is due.

What We See Every August

Every August follows a familiar pattern.

A student orders on Monday because class starts Wednesday. One required template is already out of stock. The drafting board ships separately. Another item arrives after the first assignment is due.

One Thing We Tell Every Student

Your instructor's supply list was not created by accident.

Most instructors spend years refining the tools they require. Those products were selected because they work well for the course, the assignments, and the way the class is taught.

It can be tempting to substitute a similar product or purchase the least expensive option you can find. Sometimes that works perfectly. Other times it creates unnecessary frustration.

If you are unsure whether a substitute will work, it is always worth asking your instructor before placing the order.

The Biggest Mistakes We See Every Semester

Waiting Until the Week Before Classes Start

Every August, popular drafting supplies begin disappearing from inventory.

Portable drafting boards, templates, scales, and specialty supplies often become difficult to find as colleges begin classes across the country.

Ordering early gives you the best selection and allows time to replace an item if your instructor requests something different.

Ordering from Multiple Websites

It may appear that you are saving money, but ordering from several stores often means:

• Paying shipping charges more than once
• Tracking several different packages
• Waiting on delayed shipments
• Receiving products on different days
• Spending extra time making sure everything matches the instructor's list

Whenever possible, purchasing everything from one supplier makes the process much simpler.

Buying the Cheapest Supplies You Can Find

This is probably the biggest mistake we see.

We have seen inexpensive triangles that warp, scales with markings that are difficult to read, and mechanical pencils that do not last through an entire semester.

That does not mean every premium brand is automatically the best choice.

Over the years, we have also seen companies such as Pacific Arc develop quality drafting tools that offer excellent value for students. Not every product is the right choice for every class, but many of their tools perform very well while remaining affordable.

The goal is not simply to purchase the least expensive tool or the most expensive one. It is to choose tools that are accurate, dependable, and appropriate for the course.

Architecture Students

Architecture students often have some of the longest supply lists because their courses may include drafting, model making, lettering, presentation work, and rendering.

High School Drafting Programs

Many high school drafting teachers continue to introduce students to traditional drafting techniques before moving into CAD.

Do You Really Need a Portable Drafting Board?

Not every drafting class requires one, but many do.

If your instructor specifies a portable drafting board, pay attention to both the required size and the type of parallel bar.

A complete kit saves time by helping ensure that everything arrives together and matches the instructor's requirements.

If your school offers a custom kit, it is usually the easiest way to begin the semester with the correct supplies.

Why Do Professors Recommend Certain Brands?

This is one of the questions we hear most often.

Sometimes an instructor recommends a brand because they have taught with that product for years. Sometimes classroom demonstrations are designed around a specific template, scale, marker, or drafting instrument.

In other cases, the instructor has simply found one product to be more reliable after teaching the course for several semesters.

That does not mean every premium brand is automatically the right choice.
